Food labels are there for a reason - to keep us safe. However, what is written on pack is often deceiving and dare I say it, unregulated. Not that it’s not totally false. Years ago my old boss tried to give me advice and I didn’t listen.

Mostly because I wasn’t yet at his life stage. Married, family, kids in school. I was freshly in Los Angeles and focused on making friends and connections wherever I could. But as I enter the phase of life where he was when he doled out the advice it truly makes sense.

Each new school year is your new New Year. Your starting over point. Your new time of year to make resolutions that stick.

All of that rings true. But I’d like to add another line.

The energy of this season is vibrant, work to hang onto that feeling for as long as you can.

Simple Habit Shifts

Doing one of these five things will change everything. These simple habits will change your life.

I realize it’s a bold claim, but think about it. Most often its the littlest things that snap us out of a bad mood, prevent us from sending an email that most likely didn’t need to see the light of day, or even ordering that “comfort meal” from Postmates.

Changing a habit, especially a deeply ingrained one, is not fun and not for the faint at heart. It takes 14-21 days for a new habit to stick. And often times it’s easier to swap habits - a bad one for a good one, or an annoying one to a slightly less annoying one - and have them stick.

Each year I write my son a letter on his birthday. Picking out highlights we’ve done together through the past year, what I’m proud of him for, and what he’s like now, at this new age. When I’m done with the letter, I email it to him. With the hope that someday (when he’s old enough for email), he will read the letters and know how much each day with him meant to me.
